Throwback Thursday: Alone in the dark in Gauja National Park, Latvia

I felt like somewhere between Hansel and Gretel and a Robert Harris novel when I approached this castle in Gauja National Park in Latvia one winter night in 2013.

On the road for MERIAN magazine again, I came back from a day hike when I found it near a dark little village, slightly spooky but also somehow inviting.

As it turned out, this castle is quite inviting indeed: It is called Krimulda manor, once an estate of Latvian aristocracy, today a wonderful accommodation for travellers. I spent a night there, furniture is old and service is lovely, I strongly recommend it.

Have you been to Latvia, to Riga perhaps? How did you like it?  :)
